Bakkhos guesthouse is a perfect base for those
interested in the numerous archaeological sites such as
Ephesus, with its museum in Selcuk next to the St. Jean
church, the
Temple of Artemis (one of the 7 world
wonders), and the caves of the 7 sleepers, Priene,
Didyma, Miletos and more. You can book an organised tour
or you can take one of the excellent guide books and
design your own.
There are also a few others less known archaeological
sites like Klaros, Notion, Herakleia next to
Bafa Lake
with its beautiful landscape, Labranda, the
apollo-temple of Euromos, Belevi Mausoleum, Teos or
interesting places like Birgi in Bozdaš-mountains and
Tire, with a traditional market with old handicrafts,
which are also worth a visit, maybe even more so ,
because they are untouched by the normal tourist groups.
The
House of Virgin Mary, close to the ancient city of
Ephese, which is again been visited by the Pope is
officially recognised as the last home of Mary, the
mother of Jesus. This is where she fled to, after the
crucifixion of Christ.
The
old quarters of the town of Kusadasi, and Selcuk are
worth a stroll around.
Sirince, a lovely little unspoilt
village(with old Greek houses and a church) nestling in
the hills above Selcuk is also worth a visit. Here the
local women display their craftwork, such as cushion
covers, tablecloths but also fresh olive-oil, olives and
dried herbs to sell. Also they have their Sirince wine,
which you can taste in some local places.
Another old Greek village, but less touristic is
Doganbey(Domatia)
